An algorithm, sometimes shortened to 'algo', is a set of rules that a computer program, or in the case of SEO - a search engine, uses to make calculations or fulfill a task.

In the context of SEO, algorithms are often used to determine the relevance and rankings of specific web pages in search results - as well as many other functions.

Google regularly update their algorithms and occasionally make Core Updates which come with announcements and publicity.
